This series of mothers and babies under a year is called “First Valentine” because our mothers are our first loves.

This gal was sitting in front of us at a December wedding. The low winter sun broke through and I grabbed my camera.
I took the reference photo from a bridge above the Rocky Saugeen near Traverston. It was a joy to paint because the bleached bones of fallen cedars contrasted the richness of the river bottom.
Jon, being a man, thinks that it’s all about the gear, and Donald’s reel and antique bamboo rod are extraordinary, so they both insisted that I show both of them in the painting.
